The Explorer
Of the New World
Cigar sommelier and spirited explorer Antonio de Salcedo finds himself in a new world that at once remarkably resembled the province of Isabela his home, but was strangely nothing quite like it.
The ninth-generation great-grandson of the love child of a Spanish conquistador and a Dayang-dayang, a Muslim princess of the first degree, Antonio’s childhood was filled with stories about a fantastical land where the forbidden pair found a haven.
He grew curiouser and curiouser over the years.
He set out on voyages and expeditions, one after the other, but he never found the realm of such tales — until he did.
In his notebook, Antonio records his exploration of what he now calls Valle Isabela, a sprawling, complex, dream-like valley world of distinctive creatures and the finest flora he has ever seen.
In the same way that the landscape was familiar yet strange, the creatures Antonio
encountered were a peculiar sort of the similar ones he had seen before.
And each one of them were possessors of an object —
seemingly made by human hands for human use, but enveloped
in the magic of the new world.
He believed them to be totems, each one delightfully fragrant —
and the aromas became part of the story that inspired
the flavors of Tabacalera Flor Fina.
